Task brief

The task brief is presented either on a chalkboard or on a Taskmaster-branded marker spot on the ground, near the pool in the garden. The brief for the task is as follows:

Complete the alphabet with objects.

For every minute that passes, you must choose a letter, and from that moment on, you cannot say words that begin with that letter.

Whenever you do this, one minute will be added to your total time.

You may not stay silent for more than five seconds.

For every silence over five seconds, one minute will be added to your total time.

Fastest wins.

Your time starts now.

Task notes

  • The entire alphabet has been written on the chalkboard, in order, across four columns.
  • A copy of the alphabet is also present on a large stand next to the chalkboard, with removable letters.
  • There is a Taskmaster-branded marker spot in on the ground near the chalkboard, and the bathtub is off to the side.
  • As the contestants read the task brief, Markl clarifies that all of the objects must be placed into the bathtub.
  • This is a much more difficult task than it may initially appear to non-native speakers. The letters ‘K’, ‘W’, and ‘Y’ weren’t officially added to the Portuguese alphabet until around 2008, meaning that items starting with those letters would most likely need to be items named by foreign loan words.
  • The task mechanic by which the contestants gradually lose letters from their vocabulary and must pay penalties for using them is reminiscent of the ‘Eat the poppadoms while complimenting Greg or insulting Alex’ task.
