The task brief is laid on the table in the lab. The brief for the task is as follows:

Get all the water in the vase.

If you spill any water from the plate without it entering the vase, you are disqualified.

You may not leave the lab.

Task notes

Also on the table, there is a box of matches, an apparently blank sheet of A4 paper, a large tealight candle, a white plate full of red water (stuck to the table with five pieces of some kind of gum), and a cylindrical glass vase holding a bouquet of roses (one of which has a drinking straw attached to its stem).
The most effective solution to the task is a well-known science-based trick, which had previously been used by Katherine Ryan as one of her ‘miracles’ during the first Champion of Champions special.
Inside the match box, there is a diagram showing that the vase should be placed on the centre of the plate, with the lit candle inside.
Written on the apparently blank sheet of paper in invisible ink (which may be revealed by holding the paper over a flame) are the messages ‘Vela no prato’ (‘Candle on plate’) and ‘Vaso na vela’ (‘Vase on candle’).
